The Island LIVE Season 5 launch

Season 5 of The Island LIVE kicks off on Friday 2nd November with the biggest launch event in our history. It gives us enormous pleasure to present Sweat It Out 2008 – 2018, celebrating amazing 10 years of this iconic record label, founded by Ajax dance legend.

“What would Ajax do?”, or “would Ajax love it?” are common mottos within the Sweat It Out ranks. Mostly applied when chatting about new music, making decisions on branding, where to go for lunch, or in this case, how to throw a mega party! For one night only, we take a retrospective look back at the last 10 years of Sweat It Out featuring Ajax-approved only artists and a cheeky nod back to the late 2000s electro scene.

Parachute Youth headline the night, gaining the love and attention of the Australian audience with their 2012 gold record ‘Can’t Get Better Than This’. In honour of Ajax, The Bang Gang Deejays return to the stage to take us back to the glory days of the Sydney clubbing scene. Followed by some of the biggest team-ups to have hit our shores, including a DJ set from Miami Horror (‘Holidays/’Sometimes’), the legendary duo behind ‘Where The Party’s At’Tonite Only (one part Simon Lewicki aka Groove Terminator, one part Sam Littlemore of Pnau) and of course SIO label heroes Yolanda Be Cool - who have delivered some of the label’s biggest successes including an international #1 on ‘We No Speak Americano’. With two industry heavyweights, K.I.M (of The Presets fame) and Black Angus (one half of the iconic Sneaky Sound System duo) also set to play, it’s safe to say, we’re serious. Well-loved underground house DJ Cassette joins the onslaught, alongside label man about town Danny T.

This special 10th Anniversary event is a Sydney exclusive show and celebrates the release of ‘Sweat It Out 2008 - 2018’ which is released on the same day as The Island LIVE. Head HERE to pre-order the Deluxe double vinyl package.

And if you’re feeling flush, then we have a limited number of VIP Table Packages available. All tickets include complimentary drinks on arrival – thanks to our partners Canadian Club, and free water taxis to and from Double Bay Wharf.

Q&A With Cosmo's Midnight

Cosmo's Midnight - Lead Image.png

Sydney electronic duo Cosmo's Midnight are two of Australia's brightest and more eclectic producers on the scene right now. We had a chance to chat before they take the stage to headline our final (and SOLD OUT!) Island LIVE event of the series!

1.     Welcome back to The Island LIVE! Since the last time you played at our event in 2017 you’ve been killing the music scene! From tours to festivals, what has been the best show you played?

Hey! Glad to be back. Our last time on the island was heaps of fun. Honestly I think our best show of last year and potentially ever was Falls Festival. All the stars aligned and we had some of the biggest, funnest crowds we’ve ever played to.

2.     A congratulations is definitely in order for you guys, you must be excited to be apart on the Groovin the Moo tour! Can you tell us any big plans of forthcoming releases up your sleeves?

We’ve been hoping to play GTM for a while now and we’re over the moon to be playing with such a great lineup for this year's run. Over the last two years or so we’ve been in hibernation working on lots of new music to give to everyone and it’s all led to one of our biggest musical endeavours. Can’t wait for everyone to hear it.

3.     Your collaboration with Winston Surfshirt is loved by everyone, from Spotify Viral Australia, Top 10 iTunes to Zane Lowe’s highly regarded Beats 1 playlist!  How did this masterpiece come about? What was it like working with Winston?

This track came about super organically. I was playing bass over a really simple beat and it had this nice little groove going. But when Winston hopped on the mic we felt like we could put it out then and there. From that point the track kind of wrote itself and we just beavered away to get it done.

4.     It’s been a while since you played a DJ set in Sydney, what vibe can we expect you will bring to The Island LIVE?

One of my favourite things about DJ sets is getting to hear what music the artist I'm seeing likes to listen to. So in saying that, we’re going to be playing all of the artists that inspire and influence us and also just tunes we like to get down to.

5.     Your eight-show sold out tour last year gained so much traction. What were the tour highlights?

Our tour of History last year was almost right off the back of its release. So we were a little curious as to whether people would know it by the time the tour rolled round. But it was so much fun! Everyone was loving our new stuff and the shows were so high energy! We cant wait to do more.

6.     With your last few singles you have kept a similar looking album artwork (great artwork BTW!). Is this merely a coincidence or can we expect a full album or EP out soon?

These artworks are by the extremely talented Charlotte Mei and are definitely part of a bigger story. Hopefully we can show more soon.

7.     Finally, the hard hitting question. If you weren’t musicians, what talent would you have at a world record status, and why?

Damn if I wasn't a musician hmmm maybe I'd do some form of art like painting or drawing, i remember really liking that in school. Either that or something to do with games, I've been into those since day 1.

Cosmo's Midnight's DJ set on The Island live will be their first appearance in Sydney in about 8 months! If you were one of the lucky ones to snag a ticket to the party, make sure you head over early and enjoy a cocktail while watching the mesmerising sunset over Sydney Harbour!

Q&A With Groove City

We caught up with the funkiest duo, Dan and Cal, from Groove City to chat about influences, music machines, and Pina Colada's, of course.

Groove City will be playing our SOLD OUT Island LIVE party which will be the final event for the series. We couldn't be more excited to see them turn Sydney Harbour into a dirty disco dance floor!

Hey guys! So good to have you guys back for our final The Island LIVE event for the series! Seeing as you killed it last time, what do you have in store for the next show?

Hey and thank you guys for inviting us back! Last time was so much fun but we are most definitely stepping it up a notch for our return. More live elements and much more dancing.

Your remix of Confidence Man’s man Better Sit Down Boy is all things funk, smooth and sexy. Will there be any more remixes coming out? Can we hope that this remix will be performed live?

That’s funkalicious, such kind words. We actually have our next cover ready to go which we plan to release right before the show, so that should be fun. We weren’t planning on playing it but I guess we will have to wait and find out if it makes its way into the final set list.

Your last live show was at Lost Paradise and you guys looked phenomenal! What will be the outfit choice for The Island LIVE? Another Elvis inspired look?

Oh man Lost Paradise was something else… We are planning to go the more ‘nautical funk master vibe’ for The Island which is gonna’ be real fun.

You guys have been smashing out the singles and remixes, what do you have planned for the rest of the year?

We have been in Melbourne for the past month getting as much of our music written and recorded as possible which has been incredible, and have some pretty exciting shows booked that we can’t wait to share with everyone

Who are your biggest influences on your songwriting? Do you prefer to take inspiration from the original Disco stars, or from Nu-Disco artists?

We definitely take heaps of inspiration from the original Disco stars like Shalamar and CHIC; but Calum used to write blues rock so he uses what he learnt from those years and brings it into what we are making now, which makes the unique sound that is Groove City. We also look up to more current artists like Total Giovanni and Confidence Man to help shape our sound/image too.

From your Instagram, we can see that you have been updating your musical equipment bit by bit. If you could have any single instrument/program/machine in the world, what would it be?

Without a doubt we would love to get our hands on a Minimoog synthesizer. We use an emulator software of it but there is nothing like playing with the real hardware, is there? Having a keytar eventually would be good times too.

Now, think carefully about this one. If you had to choose a cocktail that represented each one of you, what would it be and why?

Dan – “Sex on the Beach” for obvious reasons…

Cal – “I like Piña Colada’s and getting caught in the rain”

Groove City – “Old Fashioned” We’d give anything to spend the weekend at Studio 54 back in the 70’s.

Make sure you catch Groove City as they play the last set of the night on The Island LIVE!
